Septic tanks! Empty Septic tanks!

Does anyone know what the legal requirement is now on septic tanks/ sess pits etc.
I want to start planning putting one in and seem to get conflicting info regarding whats legal and whats not! What type is allowed and how far away from the building does it have to be?
