Charge on a house

A couple round the corner from us want to find out if they have had a charge put on their house as they had trouble with their neighbours a few years ago but i am not sure if you can check or not but if so how you do it.
Anyone know?

When you owe someone some money and you wont pay they can take it to court and have a charge put on your house so when you sell it they get their money

I know when we were selling our home on the coast we went to the land registry (catastral?) and asked for a Nota Simple to ensure that the mortgage we had paid off had been removed from the register. Didn't want prospective buyers to think there was a charge against the property that they might have inherited. This was some years ago now but I seem to remember that it didn't cost a lot to get.
