Fuente Nueva Empty Fuente Nueva

Wow! big money being spent on restoring the derelict church and some other bits and bobs in Fuente Nueva. I believe that its being made into some sort of museum / visitor centre. What next, a shop, cafe, bar tarmac roads? No streetlights hopefully! Anybody else noticed improvements in their village.

Well that was on the cards when we were looking at caves 7 years ago Dave! We looked at the unreformed cave in Fuente Nueva that Sean and Sally eventually bought. Nice to know that it is in fact going to happen! And, yes, lots going on here, too - mainly tidying up though. Votecatching? Or am I just being cynical?!x

I seem to recall the board says 193,000 euros being spent on the church. I'd have done it for 192,000! A few bags of Yeso, what else would it take?

Fuente Nueva Empty Re: Fuente Nueva

I passed by this amazing piece if of Fuente Neuva history yesterday and work is in full swing; I wish I had taken a pic then, the church has come a long way since the above pic was taken.

by the by, for those interested in knowing.....

By the side of the church was the lavandería, for Fuente Neuva, where all the local women used to meet to do their washing. And the old school house is almost opposite. Up till the mid 1960s there were up to 2000 inhabitants in Fuente Neuva.

It is felt that the USA's decision to bring Spain in from the cold of economic and political isolation, in 1955, was the trigger to massive economic growth, called the 'Spanish Miracle'. As a result of this growth there was a need for an increased labour force, especially in the major cities. Fuente Neuva and other rural communities, sudden loss of population in the 1960s and early 1970s is felt to be due to many companies recruitment campaigns to these rural communities offering all sorts of attractions and enticements.

However as a result of the current economic crisis some familes have started to move back. Very Happy

Sods law, i'd just placed a geocache in the lavanderia just before the work commenced. I checked to see if it was still there two weeks ago and it had gone. Maybe the builders have got it? Its got all the geocache info in Spanish, so I would like to think that they haven't binned it! Rolling Eyes
