Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world... We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class,a huge manufacturing base, and Mum stayed home to raise the kids.

What in the Hell happened? Could it be the lying parasitic politicians wasting our money?

Oh, and don't forget the relatively new bank charges....

Yes the Empire was great - but at the cost of enslaving whole populations and keeping the working people in abject poverty. We had a huge manufacturing base as people were virtually forced to buy British.
Tax was almost exclusively introduced to fight wars. After that the Successive governments couldn't get out of the habit. I don't want to go into why we lost our manufacturing base, as that is complex, sometimes controversial and not fully understandable. Now the only way the country keeps it together is with Duty and taxation, there are just too many "bills" to pay, Defence, Social, administrative, foreign aid, Quangos, Police, Fire, Health, Education, Prisons etc. the list is endless. Us "ordinaries" are just pawns. But we aren't starving - yet!
