Postal addresses for cave houses

Post by colin57 on Tue Dec 20, 2016 5:49 pm

How do addresses work for cave houses? New caves must appear in existing developments so how does numbering work?
Can a cave dweller order things from Amazon etc and expect them to arrive?

Thanks
Colin

Interesting question! The local town hall will tell you the number of your cave and the "street" name.
Most properties that aren't right in a village with their own letter box will be allocated a letter box in the nearest group of letter boxes. This will have a number.
If you have one of these, your postal addres to ensure delivery of post must include your name and the box number. Make sure the letter box has your name and the box number on it. You can get a printed label made to fix on.
Re. deliveries from e.g. Amazon, the letter box areas may be in a locked cage, in which case couriers can't access them. If you've provided a phone number they can contact you to find out where you live. Or provide an alternative delivery address, e.g. a local bar or garage that is likely to be open, and let the bar or wherever know that packages might arrive for you.
I don't do a lot of online shopping, but have never had any problems with deliveries - drivers phone for directions and, as we're a bit hidden away, I usually go up to the main road to meet them, and Amazon leaves things at the bar (that's Amazon.es, not Amazon.uk - don't know about them). If a driver hasn't been able to contact me a phone message has always been left with a contact phone number to arrange delivery.

Miron is quite correct in the info she has supplied. We tend to use the local petrol garage or a restaurant we know that is open every day and is agreeable to having packages delivered. We don't use our local bar as it is closed on one day a week (which you can almost guarantee will be the day the courier arrives) and they sometimes close on other days as the mood takes them.
With our passports, a couple of years ago, the courier rang to arrange to meet but as they weren't expected for several weeks we had gone out to a village 26km away for shopping. The courier said he would leave them at the petrol garage, which he did, so much for having to sign for them in person!

Thanks for the very helpful replies. I think I`ll have to get a phone sorted before I start ordering any large items or things will get really interesting.

Our postman is brilliant.  Had a letter addressed to us the other day with just our name, Huescar, 18830, Spain on and we still got it !
Seur know where we are for Amazon UK deliveries, UPS usually phone us and we meet him but the other day he got to 38 before he phoned and I went to meet him.  We live at 38B, which is about 250 yards away, so he's getting closer !
When we originally came here, we had a PO box at the post office, cost about 50 euro for the year I think,  then they started to deliver to the cave so we cancelled after the first year.

After learning some essential delivery driver phrases in Spanish, we eventually trained any couriers to meet us on our road or come to our house and peep outside.. It was only the first couple of years we had to chase them around town! haha

Caves can be allocated a street address, just like any other property can. There is nothing special or different about them. There is a practice in Spain of putting "s/n" in place of the house number if it hasn't been designated yet, or if you don't know.
As for couriers. I order a lot of stuff on the internet, since the local shops are so crap. Most of it doesn't get stolen! Without fail you MUST include a phone number in the contact info and it WILL be printed on the address label of the package. Couriers always call first. With me, they call to tell me that they aren't going to deliver to my house, since it's too far away. So they leave packages at a well known location.
In Benamaurel it's either the petrol station or the estanco in the village. Though some drivers leave stuff in other places: garages and bars seem to be popular.

Amazon will also deliver most things one of their drop-off points. In Baza that is either the Correos or the Kalia video rental place. Take I.D. to get your stuff.
