Jumpers in Summer
Cave houses are great in the Winter I know that. You can step in an unheated cave and it's almost pleasant even when it's freezing outside. In the day in August it can be nice to get out of the heat too. However I've been keeping an eye on the temperature of our UK house this summer and it's usually around 20-25c unheated. A couple of times it's dropped to 18c at night and it's been time to get a jumper. My question is, do you not find that in a cave house when you want to sit down and relax, you either have to have the heating or a jumper on?

Our wood burner warms the cave to the point where you can wear shorts and t-shirt to be comfortable in Dec/Jan
Re: Jumpers in Summer
I am still sleeping in a bed with douvet and wear tracky bottoms and t-shirt
I actually put on more clothes when I go to bed!

So apart from everyones dubious "sporty spice" fashion sense, I don't think I'm any wiser. Do you just go outside to warm up?

18 degrees is apparently ideal for bedrooms, but 21 degrees is recommended for living rooms.

I am sure it is mostly pshyo pphsyc phsco all in the mind, as my main rooms are about the same temp all year (about 19), they feel coldish in the winter, but feel lovely and cool in the Summer. Still, at night, I have a small blanket over my legs while in the sitting room whatever the time of year. Also in the summer I have no duvet but do in the winter, despite the room temp being constant all year.
Re: Jumpers in Summer
ok many thanks. I'm just trying to weigh up the benefit's of cave living against the apparent negative that I may move to a warm country and then spend most of my inside time in a tracksuit, jumpers, under a blanket or just plain cold!

Re: Jumpers in Summer
It's so much easier to warm up when you're chilly, than to cool down when things get uncomfortably hot..........not a problem in a cave

Re: Jumpers in Summer
I would in the summer, liken the 18 degrees, to natural aircon and when it's 40+ degrees outside it's like drinking cool water inside. Very comforting to know you can escape the searing heat.
We have various friends who live on the coast and day and night they cannot escape the heat and those with aircon say it is very costly to run.
Come the winter, after a couple of logs and with amazing insulation, we are down to our underwear, (smile). Even when it’s -10 at night outside.
Again our friends on the coast without central heating, shiver through the winter as even on the coast in the winter nights can be cold and chilly.
Now into our 3rd year of experiencing day after day after day of hot searing summer sun, (which we love don't get me wrong) we appreciate why caves at 18 degrees in the summer are such a joy to live in.

Looking for a way to cut and paste Col's quote and tattoo it to my hubby for a permanent reminder......
By the way, I've been sleeping in a caravan for the last few nights as we've been doing stuff with chemicals in the cave. UNCOMFORTABLY HOT! Preferring 18 degrees all the time

Re: Jumpers in Summer
During our first searingly hot summer here, we did what we would have done in England - opened all the windows to try to get some air movement. After that, we did it the Spanish way - all windows and shutters firmly closed in the summer to keep out the heat. I'm never even remotely cold in our cave from March to October, and from June to August it's just bliss to walk a couple of feet inside into cool, cool air. I'm sitting in my study writing this at 10.50 p.m., wearing a thin sundress. Of course, people's individual body thermostats vary hugely, which must make a big difference.

In Summary
We had family over last month for a week and they took up our two double cave bedrooms. They had just come from an apartment in Benidorm with no air conditioning and absolutely loved the cool caves with duvets ! We unfortunately had to move upstairs. We sweated buckets up there for a week, got bit to buggery because we had to have a window open and the fan above our heads kept us awake ! The day they left we moved back down to the comfort of our cave.
In the winter months Dec, Jan and Feb we have the log burner out back and after an hour or two we are stripped and have music and candles going on, you cant beat it.

Re: Jumpers in Summer
How do "fronts" compare which many people build onto their caves houses? I know these are cold in the winter so you just go into the cave depths but do these warm up the cave in the summer?

Re: Jumpers in Summer
The house front is just like any other house, but as you walk through to the cave its like instant air con. Nice to retreat to the warm cave in winter !

Sorry spice man - didn't mean to titillate, and it's not a pretty sight!

Don't apologise Jenny I rely on a quick titillate these days and there's nothing wrong with you that a paper bag over my head wouldn't cure. Spicey, no offence meant.

Shiny, I'm getting a bit slow on the uptake - took me 24 hours to work out what you meant!
spice man - I have no doubt that you'd be greatly improved with a paper bag over your head. No offence meant, of course.
