Has anyone undertaken minor cave excavations themselves ?

I want to cut out an area large enough to slide in a chest of drawers. Is this something that can reasonably be undertaken yourself or should I stick with using a builder ?

If anyone has done it then what sort of tools did you use ?

Thanks

Danny

Hi Danny

I cut out a space for the fridge freezer in my kitchen. I used a lump hammer and large bolster. It took a fair while and several wheelbarrows later, I had a good space.

Use your head and think about where the water and electric are going, or use a detector, as the new way is to run everything through the walls and not the floors.

If you are cutting into the arch of the cave room, be very, very careful, as this is what gives the room it's strength. Cutting in down low, or in the middle of a flat wall, should be fine.

If you are at all worried, get advice from a good Spanish builder.

Shouldn't be any problem cutting out a niche or alcove, provided the cave structure is sound. If you don't want to do it by hand a jigger-pick type drill (SDS drill) and suitable bit will be quicker but really dusty!
As said above, best to stay clear of the ceiling area or get professional advice first.
