When do you buy your wood ?
I am wondering if the price for buying wood for burning varies as you get closer to the winter months ?
We are making our first visit to our new cave in a couple of weeks and wonder whether it is worth stocking up now or later in the year (next visit is September) ?
I have seen wood for sale at both Huescar and Baza markets but was wondering if anyone has any other recommendations of where to get it/how it is delivered/volume delivered.
Many thanks as always.

Re: When do you buy your wood ?
Its been discussed a few times. Try the search button towards the top of the page. Personally I think Loli tends to be the best. Just at the side of the motorway at Baza.
Re: When do you buy your wood ?
I don't buy wood myself (plenty going free around here) but have been told that the guys who come to the local markets with a lorry or trailer load are likely to lower their prices about now as demand falls with the warmer weather. So it might be worth stocking up!

Re: When do you buy your wood ?
Now is a good time to buy, as you will have plenty of time for it to season (dry out) before you need to use it next winter.
Not a good idea to buy any wood here during the winter period, as it is generally 'green' freshly cut wood. Most sellers will tell you if it is seasoned or not, but you do need to ask!
I can't really help with suggestions of where to buy your wood, as you haven't put where you live on your profile!

Hi guys,
Thanks agin for the useful responses, especially about secure storage as I hadn't considered that. Have updated my profile - our cave house is on the outskirts of Baza. Danny

Re: When do you buy your wood ?
I bought €400 worth of olive offcuts from Loli 2 years ago last November and that was a lorry-load which they delivered. I still have a small pile left over after 2 winter's worth. That's not enough for next year, so I'll be ordering more when it starts to get cold.DannyandJosie wrote:Sorry - one last question, what quantity do you buy wood in and whats the average costs.

I would recommend NOT storing it against the wall of your property - it attracts insects and also stops ventilation and can be a source of damp.

Thanks Pete,
Great bit of advise on storage as against a wall was exactly where I had thought to store it !

Re: When do you buy your wood ?
It depends on how big your property is, the direction it faces and also, if it is a cave, cortijo, has lots of outbuild, if you have other sources of heating, etc....
My property is 95% cave and faces SW. I bought 2 trailers of almond and olive from Boni (between Galera and Huescar) which cost me 80€ per trailer load, last spring. I lit the woodburner around 3 times a week from the beginning of November last year, to the end of March this year and I still have plenty of wood left over.
Yes, don't store against a wall! Try and keep it well away from your house if possible. A big pile of wood is a great home for Scorpions and other nasties!
You need as much air around the wood as possible. Old pallets are great to put on the ground and then pile the wood up on top. Try not lay it all in the same direction, you want to get air gaps inbetween.
Cover the wood during wet weather, but remember to take the cover off when the weather is good!
Loli in Baza sells all types of wood, at good prices. They have separate piles for seasoned and unseasoned wood too.
Hope this helps!

Re: When do you buy your wood ?
More good advise - we are on the outskirts of Baza so Loli sounds like our closest option - can anyone give me a better indication of where he is/name of business. Thanks again. Danny

Loli is off the roundabout by the ITV centre, down the small service road,it then runs alongside the motorway, big blue gates, can't miss it,big mountain of logs !
