I see there is a calendar above - can we add events to it?

I believe you can, but haven't had a play with it yet. Have a fiddle!

Does that mean you have to activate it Dave? I found this answer on the internet

Think its working now, if you go to whats on and post details of an event, down the bottom you'll find a bit where you can fill details in for the calendar. Simpelz.

Maybe it is just the moderators that can add the events?

Try now, i think ive managed to change it. You could always volunteer to be a moderator for the 'whats on'
