When you are out and about, are you supposed to carry your passport with you?

And when you are driving, are you supposed to have vehicle papers--registration, insurance, MOT, etc? Is this the same if it's a Spanish or a British-registered vehicle?

I never carried anything with me in Franco's day.

Best to carry it all Tim! and NIE/Padron etc.
It makes the Guardia move on quicker.

I also normally wave to the police.. it confuses them and not been stopped for a couple of years using this method. Wave, smile, then look the other way whilst driving past (not advisable though).

You don't need to carry your NIE or Padron, but it's probably a good idea to keep some sort of photo ID on you, like a driving licence.
When I got stopped by trafico a few weeks back all they wanted to see was the log book and my licence (a UK one which was perfectly acceptable to them). Although it's generaly believed you need to carry every document under the sun in your car (Chinglish whispers?) I am not so sure. I pulled everything out for trafico and he wasn't interested, just log book & licence. That's my story from a very recent experience.  Twisted Evil

Don't carry your passport with you they're worth 15K on the black market a friend in Alicante had hers in her handbag as she'd been to the bank to sign some documents, stopped off at Intermarche to buy some groceries and was robbed and beaten in the car park - They only took her passport.

If you have a scanner you can create a mini version of your passport which is handy for ID purposes other than that if you're driving you'll need your photo licence, insurance and log book. As the Padron only lasts about 5 minutes now you'll spend more time renewing it than using it.

I have scans of my passport, driving licence, NIE, padron, etc. on my iPhone.

I tried showing the iPhone scan of my driving licence to a traffic cop in Marrakech who was NOT amused and told me to carry the original.

Presumably no need to carry the paper section of the driving licence?

I have my passport, driving licence and nie all photo copied and endorsed by the town hall. just take originals and copy's, they will stamp them to prove they are legal copy's. the charge for this was €1.50.

And you are supposed to carry proof from the bank that the insurance has been paid, I have been asked for this on the one occasion I have been stopped.
