1568, during the Spanish oppression of the Moors, who were forced to give up their Muslim religion or die horrribly, they were called Moriscos. in 1568 in the Granada area they started to rebel. The Marquises of Mondejar and Los Velez carried out an energetic repression from January 1569, but support for the rebels increased, Muslims in North Africa sent Arms and Volunteers.....In April 1569 the King put the campaign under the overall control of his half brother Don Juan of Austria... There were massacres on both sides. Particularly notable was the resistance put up in 1570 by the town of GALERA. When it fell all its 2,500 inhabitants, Women and children included were slaughtered, the town was razed and salt poured over it.

I recall the townspeople put on a play about this some years ago. I wondered what it was all about, not understanding enough Spanish or it's history at the time. I can now see the significance of the Moors and Christians fiestas.

Found the info in in HENRY KARMEN - SPAINS ROAD TO EMPIRE - The making of a world power 1492 - 1763.
Well you gotta read something whilst 'on the throne'.

Sounds an interesting book and something we have been looking for, for sometime . The history around here is fascinating with the moors and Christians and even before that during the era of the Dama De Baza , to this day nobody knows where the hell she came from . If you haven't been to the museum behind the Abadi , that is well worth a visit . I would love a historian to give tours around here ( in English )

There is just one thing that worries me about your post , exactly how many Galerians did you have to massacre to get on the throne ? Just asking oh righteous ruler Wink

I haven't massacred any Galerians, yet, though there may have been 1 or 2 new Galerians (Extrajaneros) I would have cheerfully massacred, they escaped back to the UK before the event could take place...
