Re: medical insurance/health care
Hi Ross
I have recently been looking into Medical Insurance... I am 44 years old...
Allianz in Cullar came up with a quote with Generali Seguros of 76,48€ pcm
Adeslas (Vital) are coming in at 58,20€ pcm
Nectar are quoting 56,94€ pcm
MM Aresa 43,90€ pcm
Asefa 39,50€ pcm
THE LAST 4 WERE VIA INTERNET FORMS...
All quotes are for a very comprehensive cover, including Dental Treatment with access to local Hospitals/Medical Centres and quite varying limits on the claims.
I think it will take me some time to work out which is best for me personally!
Hope this helps...

Go through one of the established Broking firms if you are not fluent in Spanish. Many Insurance company's here sell anything to get the commission and it is not always appropriate. The consequences could be dire.
The British Embassy can direct you to reputable firms. Or try Danniels Fox in Mojacar. (No I am not on commission)

I have used Danniels Fox for a multitude of Insurance related transactions. Because I am self employed and registered in the system, I don´t need Medical Insurance. I have no hesitation in referring them

Re: medical insurance/health care
One point that I forgot to mention with the ones I listed above is that if you live in a rural area like I do, you can´t continue to use your local Doctor. Baza was the nearest from here (I live a few km´s from Galera) which is just too far to go for a basic appointment.
Sanitas are more expensive, around 90€ pcm but for this they let you continue to use your local Doctor, also include a better Dental scheme and are giving free prescriptions for all of 2012. Policies are available in Spanish or English.
I have also had a call from Rafael at Nectar and his supervisor is going to find out if Huescar Medical Centre can join their scheme, this would mean my local surgery and all in this area covered by Huescar would be included. I should find out next week and if this would affect the premium of 56,94€ pcm.

Mikey I hear what you are saying, but there are some of us that are not eligible to pay into the system.
I believe I/we would need to be self employed and/or be over a certain age, before I became eligible.

I looked into paying social security here as a self-employed person and was told it would be at least €250 per month regardless of your earnings - apparantly it´s a good system, but on a few hours teaching English each week it´s out of my league!

If you know a farmer or someone who works the fields you can ask them if you could be on their books as an agricultural worker only pays 90 euros a month, you pay them the 90 euros and hey presto you are in the system

Re: medical insurance/health care
Yes, as far as I know that is the problem with Spains system, anyone that works has to pay the same amount, however much you earn.
I was told by the Social Security Office in Huescar that if you don't work, you can't pay into the system. I believe it is now 270€ pcm??? So paying for Private Medical Insurance for me makes sense.

Thankyou for the information Mikey, but if we did something like that I am sure we would be found out! So we'll continue to try & stay above board.

Re: medical insurance/health care
Nectar didn't come back to me, so I have signed up with Sanitas. I paid my first premium on the 28th Feb, was texted my membership number on the 2nd March and received my paperwork, manual and Medical Card today. All very professional.
I now have the joyful task of taking all this to Huescar Medical Centre and trying to expain what it is! I really hope they have other foreign residents that have already done the same.

Re: medical insurance/health care
Not long after my last post above, I happened to be in Galera Town Hall. I asked if I had to let Huescar Medical Centre know that I had Private Medical Insurance - they said I didn't.
This week I had to visit my Doctors Surgery in La Alqueria and was asked for my name, by the Nurse. She had never asked before, but wrote this in her book.
I then thought I would check with her about letting Huescar know about my Insurance. She said I should let them know asap!
I popped in to Huescar Medical Centre today, went to the entrance desk and handed in my old form (which had expired Mar 2012) he looked at it and my Sanitas Card - printed out a new form dated until Mar 2014 and said 'see you next year'.
That was easy then!

Re: medical insurance/health care
If you are from the EEC, because of changes in legislation you may be entitled to medical cover here in Spain, regardless of age.
If you want to know how, pm me and I will pass om the info. Please include your e mail address or telephone no.
