Heartworm risk ???
hi
I am moving into the area in the next couple of weeks. presently I am in the Algarve and have been giving my 2 dogs (- Bonnie, 5 year Cocker and Lyra, 3 year husky cross - who say hi ;-) ) heartworm tablets each month as there is a high risk here. Dog owners is this what you have been advised to do by a vet or is there not a risk there ?
I know it can vary place to place ie there is no risk in the Lisbon area - do figure :-)

Re: Heartworm risk ???
Well Cavern, I haven't heard of that particular problem in this area. The only 'extra' thing that I have been advised about, for this area is 'sandfly' or leishmaniosis. An unpleasant and potentially lethal condition. Someone on this forum had a dog that was affected.
Our dogs wear Scalibor collars which last six months as protection from sandfly. They also protect from some fleas and tics and other nasties for a lesser period of time. These collars are usually cheaper purchased from a feed merchant or pet shop rather than a vets.

Thanks Rosie and Hotchick, you are sort of confirming what I thought - heartworm is spread by mossies but I am wondering because it is a bit cooler and away from the coast the parasite isn't in your area. That could be a good thing the monthly tablets cost a fortune.
leishmaniasis is a problem here in Portugal too both my present dogs are Portuguese shelter dogs so stand a bit better odds with their immunity. I don't use the collars mainly because my old British lab was allergic to them. I may start them up again with these 2 though.
thanks once again
Pat

I don't use the collars Pat, various reasons, i was gutted when my bitch developed it, and had to have her put down, i now have a lot of Spanish dogs and local goat herders and farmers have told me not to use the collars because if i am late getting new ones it attracts the sand fly, how true this is i do not know, i did ask my horse vet and he also said the same. All my dogs live outside, i do spray them with zooveca alot, and it keeps everything at bay. (So far and hopefully forever)

question
What is zoovica,is it expensive and who sells it? I have four large ex strays and they live outside most of the time, collars, sprays and food cost a fortune.

I use Advantix for Dogs. It's a 4 weekly spot on treatment you can get from the vets here. Not cheap but it covers sandfly, mozzies, ticks and fleas. I don't use the collars either as it causes fits in one of my dogs and flea treatment is also needed after a couple of months anyway.

Zooveca is available from most animal feed merchants, its an insecticide, 7 Euros a bottle but lasts for months, Or Apron @ 12 euros a bottle (Same stuff, different brand name)
Water it down, spray or or bathe the animals in it, gets rid of fleas/ticks/insects/flies etc......
I bathe ours in it then spray a top up once a month, wonderful stuff
A friend took a bottle back to the Uk for her cats and sprayed the house with it, had no fleas all summer! Im now doing mail order for the UK
