Spanish bank commission?
We have had a small cheque (£72) from HM Revenue and Customs which I tried to bank in my Santander bank this morning, only to be told that the commission would be 50 euros!! Is this the same for all Spanish banks? Our other option is to bank it in our UK Bank but it has our Spanish address on the front and our UK Bank doesn't know we live here permanently! x

Sally, do you have a Caja Rural Account? I have paid cheques from £60 upwards and the commission up to £1500 (ish) is around 10€. You get a great rate from Caja Rural with Cheques, for example if the rate is 1.41, I get 1.39 or a bit more after comm.
Hope this helps!

Most british banks have a completely automated chequing system these days. You fill in your "paying in" slip, put the cheque and the slip in an envelope and drop it in a letterbox inside a branch. Some even let you pay cheques in through the ATM. So on that basis I doubt the computers would even look at the address. So either aska friend to drop the cheque into a branch of your bank (with a paying-in slip filled out) or do it yourself next time you're back in the UK. Just be aware though, that cheques from HMRC have a shelf-life: use them or lose them.
If that doesn't work I'd phone up the english bank you use and just check that it'll be OK to deposit it in your english account. Since the cheque is made out to you and you'd be paying it into your named account I doubt that the bank would be fussy about the address. If they do query it tell them you're in Spain for an extended period.

Don't really understand the problem here - we have two Nationwide accounts in different areas of England and our Spanish address is registered to the accounts. Why would the English banks worry about where you live as long as they have your money??

Me as well!
That happened to me last year so we ended up putting in UK account next time we were over. You can safely tell your bank you have moved over by the way, it's perfectly legal to move abroad and keep your bank account. You will be treated exactly the same as if you were in the UK but all post comes here. You don't have to worry about bank cards arriving when they become due
