try to get Propano (propane) bottles instead of Butano (Butane). It's a bit cheaper and burns a bit more efficiently.

Although propane is more popular, butane continues to be used as a fuel source. It is used as a fuel in stoves, cigarette lighters and even in aerosol sprays as a propellant. Besides, butane is cheaper than propane, but comparatively, it is more difficult to use, so it is not very commonly available and not many gadgets, devices are designed to be used with butane as fuel source.

But you should know that butane is more efficient than propane when used as fuel. If same volume of butane and propane is burned at temperature above freezing, butane will end up providing 12% more energy than propane. Thus, butane can be the preferred choice when it is available in adequate amounts since it is energy-efficient and also has an advantage of cheaper price.

On Monday we paid 12.40 from the Repsol delivery man for an 11kg propano bottle. I was told a couple of years ago that the propano bottles hold slightly less than butano bottles so, weight for weight, they worked out the same price as butano (don't know if that still holds true as I don't know the price of a butano bottle). However, we found that in winter we had trouble with the butano ones as they didn't use up all their contents which is why we changed over.

As Gordon says above, just make very sure that the item you are using is designed to take Propane. Some cookers, gas heaters and water heaters will not last long if you use Propane and it can also be very dangerous to do so.

If you find that you have unused gas in a bottle from one appliance, try the leftovers in another appliance - worked for me over the winter!

When the gas bottle runs out on the gas fire I move it to the cooker - there's always a bit left! Have tried propane once when my supplier had run out of butane, but thought it burnt too 'hot' for cooking.

Butan does freeze in the winter if outside. The regs say it should be outside but most of us keep it in. Gas cookers are always inside so regs dont make sense.

We have gas house and gas is piped into the cave house in the winter one bottle would last 3.5 to 4 days and supplies all the hot water Kitchen and two bathrooms, radiator heating in the lounge. But we have six bottles joined up at a time. In the summer it lasts a very long time. Understandably we don't get freezing problems.Smile
