We started a small farm in Cornwall a number of years ago and then carried on when we became pensioners. We are now at another crossroads as the last of our children is ready to leave home this summer.

Before Cornwall, we lived in Devon and spent many holidays in a fisherman's cottage belonging to a beloved aunt. Cave homes remind us of those irregular walls and ceilings.

We have found a couple of caves that really appeal to us but.......how did anyone else decide to take the plunge and move to Andalucia to live?

I was living in the North of Spain and amazingly, after buying my house and renovating it, it went up in value, even during the recession.  Having had a few problems with the house and also being a bit of a gypsy anyway, I started looking for somewhere else to live.  I could only afford a downwards move in Asturias, due to taxes/sales fees, so looked at other areas.

I hadn't initially wanted to live 'down south' due to the heat.  Once I discovered caves that would keep cool in the hot summers and the high Altiplano area with its snow covered mountains and long cool/cold winters - I was hooked.

I love it down/up (!) here and it is the best decision I could have made.  I chose a mostly true cave and do sometimes need a fan on at night in the summer when it has been very hot out for a few days, but that is it.

I had recently thought about moving to another cave, but have now decided to stay put.  Maybe the Gypsy in me is going.  Rather than renovate another cave, I am going to start again on this one - much cheaper than moving!

Best of luck with your cave hunt.
