Cave houses Empty Cave houses

Post by Rumah baru Sun Apr 13, 2014 12:44 pm

Hi again everyone.
I first posted yesterday asking about the Cuevas del Campo area, and peoples opinion of the area. I realise that most people seem very happy and loyal to the particular area they live in, so perhaps no one else on this forum lives in that area.
I must say though, we have been totally blown away and converted to the idea of living in a cave house of our own. I had done a lot of reading up on them, but when I first set foot in the lovely cave house we rented for a few days in Baza, I just couldn't wipe the smile off my face!!
It felt like the sort of home I had been looking for all of my life......the uneven walls, the unusual features......everything about them.....it just felt like the sort of place I had been searching for all my life!!
Truly, not looking through rose coloured spectacles, and realise that all won't be perfect, but that's the case wherever you live. But now we have finally sampled cave house life, we really can't wait to move into one of our own, and as an added bonus, stumbling on this forum is just heaven sent, as it seems to be full of friendly, like minded people, who have all embraced the cave way of life and all it has to offer.
I see that a lot of you are from Galera, and although it looks beautiful, we are looking for a more remote cave from neighbours, as we have six cats, a loud parrot and a leopard tortoise to cater for.
Our cats aren't that keen on dogs, and we wouldn't want them to pester neighbours, as we realise that although there are a lot of cat lovers out there, dogs seem to be more prevelent.
Nothing against dogs as we love them and have owned quite a few rescues over the years, but we have to consider the animals we currently share our lives with and their continued happiness and well being.
Can anyone tell me what vaccinations my cats will require, that they don't currently have in the uk? Is it just the rabies one? Also, for anyone that has done it....how easy is it to move my pets over from the uk?
Thankyou everyone, and any advice will be gratefully recieved.

hi there,
Nice to get a reply.
One cave we are looking at is 1.8km from nearest neighbour in Cuevas.
I don't think my critter collection will bother anyone from this distance, although i'm sure within a matter of weeks, my parrot will have learned to mimic the barking of a dog to perfection!!
Sorry, but was your'e message supposed to read can tell you, or can't tell you???

Be aware that not all dogs in Spain have owners - or are attached to houses.
There are many, MANY, strays. Probably more than there are pets (as the little blighters breed) and they wander around anywhere and everywhere. So your cats will probably "get to know" quite a few where ever you go.

As for ......the uneven walls, the unusual features...... I can put you in touch with some builders in the UK who can supply these for you  Razz  (they can't do them any other way, apparently)

Otherwise, welcome!

Hi Pete,
Yes, we know about the dog problems in Spain. Its such a shame when you se them all wandering about and running out in front of cars. I can see why so many animal lovers end up with multiple rescued dogs as pets.
Our cats have lived with dogs before, but a couple prefer not to, although they can take care of themselves!!
I know all about the uk builders and uneven walls, but at least in a cave house, it makes an attractive feature, rather than an eyesore.
Thankyou for the welcome  cat

The only extra vaccination our cats have from the Uk is Rabies as you said. Otherwise, the usual annual jab plus leukaemia, exactly as they had in UK.

Re travelling over with pets, obviously you will need pet passports for all as i am sure you will be well aware. Easy to sort out with your vet. We came from Scotland and made the journey by car via the Channel Tunnel in 3 days with 2 cats.

There is an exellent Holiday Inn Express right next to the Tunnel who happily take pets. We also stayed in a hotel in southern France, again with no issues re the cats. The French seem very laid back about pets in hotels!

Obviously you have a larger number of pets so things will be a bit more complicated for you!

Good luck with it

Thankyou for all that info, much appreciated. I know the cats e.t.c won't appreciate the journey, but i'm sure they will love the new life once we do get there.
Where abouts in Scotland did you move from? How long have you lived in Spain?
Thankyou for the reply  cat

Welcome. Hope you get over. You can be as remote or not as you like!
We brought one cat over that lived longer in the climate out here definitely (he made 20). Now we have two cats that adopted us, both now spayed etc. Vets in the area were great. We did everything last minute when we came over so the cat flew over to Malaga while we drove down with a car full of stuff.

good luck!

Flying the cats over...sounds expensive?
How easy was that to arrange?
If we moved overat the moment, it would also mean relocating my 84 year old dad, as he lives with us.
I know he wouldn't consider driving over in Spain (opposite side of the road e.t.c), so he would rely on us to get him out and about.
Is there anything socially for an elderly, sound of mind, but not so much of body!! gent to do in the area?
The cave we are looking at has the potential for us to rent out part to generate at least a small income to help subsidise our living costs, as we would both be giving up our jobs, so scary, but exiting too. affraid

We flew the cat over using jets4pets.com. Only because we weren't organised at the time. It was a good service though, and we went to collect the cat at Malaga airport. The cat was delivered on a fork lift truck in a big box. Really peed off when we got him, but as soon as he got in the car he lay flat out on the back seat purring in the sun!

I wouldn't bank financially on renting out any possible place at the moment.

It wouldn't be a neccessity to rent out immediately, but something we would like to consider in time, just to help with the bills really. When we sell our house, we will have a sizeable amount in the bank, but semi retiring at our ages, it won't last that long....but far longer than it would with the cost of my utility bills in the uk!!
Thankyou for the pet info. I will look into it, or may even use a pet courier I know as he loves cats !!

Re. your dad - all villages here have a pensionistas bar/club: opening hours and activities vary depending on the size of the village. There's usually card games and chat at the very least. There's an annual membership fee. There may well be adult education classes for oldies too - in Castillejar there's a group does  art and craft stuff and activities to keep the grey matter going. That's if he's willing and able to mix with Spanish speaking people.
Otherwise, there's some ex-pat activity in the area, which I'm sure other members can give you info on, but he would probably need transporting as I doubt if much happens in Cuevas del Campo.
If he likes to sit in the sun in the plaza and pass the time of day, enjoy a beer and a tapa and an afternoon paseo he'll soon make friends even if his Spanish is fairly basic.

Welcome to the Forum! Sounds as if moving with several cats could be interesting! Know nothing about Cuevas del Campo but I am sure it's perfect, just as all the areas we live in are!! I am in Castillejar and I love the village and surrounding areas! Like visiting Galera but never fancied living there however lots of people do and love it! It's all down to personal preference in the end! Sounds as if you have found your perfect area so stick with it! Hope you can make the move soon!

Thankyou miron and gilly for the messages, and everyone else who has replied too. It is very kind of you all and much appreciated. We know we can make a life for ourselves out there. We lead quite a simple lifestyle, so costs should be kept to a minimum. The biggest expense we have is our cats, with their prefered choice of food and their vet bills....one goes down with a virus needing treatment, and you can guarantee five more will follow within the following fortnight. Of the joys of living in a multi cat household lol. But we love them all and wouldn't swap them.
Can't seem to find anyone on here who can shed any light on Cuevas del Campo, so perhaps no Brits there yet, apart from the owners of the cave house we are looking at. Oh well, we can be pioneers then, can't we??
Miron, unfortunately my Dad does not know any Spanish, but we feel he could be happy out there as he enjoys being with us, and if we moved, he would get to spend even more time with us as we wouldn't be out at work all day.
Can anyone tell me about the nearest golf course. Prices, distance e.t.c, as he loves golf and this is the one thing he will miss from the uk. We thought if we could make the trip to a distant golf course a couple of times a month, this would delight him whilst he is still able to play!

I've not yet met any ex-pats who live in Cuevas del Campo, so maybe there aren't many! You probably know that it's known for its Semana Santa Viviente - the re-enactment of the Easter story. That's the only time I've been (worth going too), but it looked like a nice place!
Re. golf courses, I've got friends who are a mine of info about them - they are away just now (playing golf on the coast!) and aren't forum members cos they don't live in caves, but I'll find out what I can when they get back later this week and let you know.

Thanks Miron, that would be great if you could supply me with any potential golf info for my dad.
Yes, I have actually watched the Easter story re-enactment on utube!! Must be a sight to behold.

I see that you are in the Scottish Highlands, where exactly? I lived in Orkney for 30 years before moving here! My two daughters live in Orkney and my son is in Aberdeen. I love the highlands and especially Inverness!

Hi gilly,
We are originally from Nottinghamshire, but moved to 35 miles north of Inverness approx 13 years ago, to a small place called Nigg. My son now stays in Glasgow and my daughter in St Andrews.

I am also originally from Nottinghamshire! Small world eh? Know Nigg passed it many times up and down the A9 over the years. Never visited it though, hear that it was very hard hit with the recession.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Know Nigg well, my Dad is from Tain and still have family there. I can remember playing on the beach at Nigg as a kid long before the rigs moved in. Still have to go on the Ferry every time we visit.

Hi gilly and La Mancha,
Wow, it really is a small world!!
Where abouts in Nottinghamshire are you from gilly? Yes, Nigg was very hard hit by the recession, and was virtually shut down long before we came here, so it was a very quiet place to live. However it has finally reopened and seems to be getting busier by the day now. It's now manufacturing wind turbines by a company called Global Energy. It's great to have a new source of employment for people in the area, but we feel it is now time for us to escape, before civilisation catches up and overwhelms us :-)
La Mancha, Tain is a lovely place and we do most of our shopping there at the new Asda that opened up as competition for the less new Tesco that also moved in, along with a Lidl!!
The beaches are lovely here, but unfortunately I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to the ferry. I only used it once with the car. The weather was calm(for a change), the waterways like a mill pond, and I ended up feeling sooo sick....never again!!

There are a few ex-pats living here full-time, but as far as I know, not many live in Cave-Homes, or are members of the forum.

There is a bar on the road to Pozo Alcon, at the turn-off to La Colonia, where a lot of ex-pats from Cuevas used to meet - but I think the British owners have now moved on.

I can only manage to get over once or twice a year due to commitments in the UK - but hope to live here full-time in the near future.
