As some of you already know, Ross and I have renounced troglodyte living and moved back to Blighty, for entirely positive reasons. For anyone considering moving, either to or from Spain, I'd highly recommend www.matthewjamesremovalsspain.com. I found their name on another expat forum, independently recommended by several different posters. They put in a quotation £2,000 below the price quoted by the firm I've used for years, based on self-estimation of the volume. They have useful algorithms to help with the calculation, although not always accurate. 3 feet of bookshelf space, for example, is supposed to equal 1 book box, on the basis of which, after diligently measuring our bookshelves, I calculated that we'd need 71 book boxes. In the event, there were only 40+ (and yes, I can tell the difference between inches and centimetres!). To compensate, I reckon I seriously underestimated the number of "miscellaneous" boxes (1 kitchen cupboard = 1 box). They reserved the right, reasonably enough, to revise the price once the packing and loading was done, but didn't do so.

I booked a full packing service and the crew were just amazing. They never stopped working from the moment they arrived, not even for tea/coffee, which they drank "on the hoof". No lunch break either - they just kept going. They were friendly and polite, treating us and our belongings with courtesy and respect, and were very helpful and professional.

The delivery was just as good. Every box had been clearly labelled with room of origin as well as contents, and I'd added room of destination. Fragile items (of which we have many) were carefully packed and clearly marked and there wasn't one single breakage. I really can't recommend them highly enough.

Only problem is I'm surrounded by a fortress of boxes and a sea of packing paper (23 black binliners full at the last count, and more to go).

Hope this post doesn't contravene forum regulations. I'm recommending, rather than advertising, a bloody good service.

Hello to all (and particularly Dave and Carol) from Newton Abbot.
