Targets Sanitaria Individual
Recently patients attending Baza Hospital who are in possession of Spanish issued medical cards have been refused treatment and referred to the Invoice Office. Fortunately their translator was really efficient and argued on their behalf that they were correct. This relates to pensioners and those below pension age.
We have been told that, in order to prevent any problems, to take in addition to your Medical Card the following:
A) The letter you received from the Securidad Social, ( Documento acreditativo del derecho a asistencia sanitaria), when you first applied.
B) The letter you received after registering at the Health Centre with the above letter. This is headed;
Certificación de datos en la base de datos de usuarios del systems sanitario pública andaluz.
That should do the job.

What's your stance on this Ken? Do they think that there is a quantity of forged or fraudulently acquired cards in circulation?

Re: Targets Sanitaria Individual
There's been lots in the UK press recently about EHIC's not being accepted. Is this just an extension of this attitude?
Re: Targets Sanitaria Individual
The answer is, I don't know. Bearing in mind I had a current Health Card in September and was presented with a bill for €7500 when discharged from a hospital in Alicante. I presented that to my doctor here and it was submitted and paid.
The are deffo tightening up, her and in the UK. On the coast they are wise to residents using a UK issued EHIC. My advice is get legal takes a little effort and with the translator we use, doesn't cost a lot. Still this is Spain, who knows what's next..........they need the revenue!

The bad part is, that in his post Ken says people are being questioned, who have tarjetas.

You would have been sent a letter before you received your card. Keep the letter it states that you are intitled to health care. If they question the card then show them the letter. It is in Spanish and they cannot argue that! Keep it in a safe place and let others know where it is in case!

Everyone who has applied for them under the old and new rules should have their card. When you first apply you receive a letter as explained above. Take that to the health centre to register and then you receive a second letter a week or so later. Keep those and the card with you when you visit the hospital.
I don't think it will be too much of an issue as things settle down.
If I hear any more I will keep you posted. Above all don't let it put you off applying. The governments, here, and in the UK are tightening up and that also applys to entitlement and usage of EHIC. Again, the British Embassy website has a lo of good information.

Re: Targets Sanitaria Individual
I've never received my medical card, even though I applied and received all the other papers a few years ago now. Ami checked when she was at the doctors in the village and I am definitely on the system. Luckily, I have never had to consult a doctor in the 8+ years I've been living here, but I wondered how I would fare if I had to go to Baza Hospital without the actual card? x

As long as you have the original paperwork you should be OK.
If you want a card, I would suggest you speak to the Social Worker at the Huescar Medical Centre. It certainly is very useful for prescriptions etc.

Yeah, I wish....... Thanks for the compliment. Most of the information I get is via The Royal British Legion Spain as a caseworker, through the Consulate in Malaga.
A great source or help is Natalie the translator in Baza.
