Breathalyzers in France

Post by mame on Sun Jan 15, 2012 5:29 pm

Just been reading about the fact that we will need to carry Breathalyzers kits in our vehicles when in France from this Spring. It is a €17 fine if stopped and you do not have one.

What?
Reminds me of the joke.......
Copper says "can you breathe into this bag, it'll tell me if youre drunk".
Driver says "ive got a bag at home that will tell me that"

They have also brought in that if your SatNav shows where the speed cameras are they can fine you for that too (from 4th Jan this year) and it is a lot more than 17 euros - nearer 1000 I believe. We have a Tom Tom and on their web site they explain how we can delete French speed cameras on it. Have yet to try to do it but we shall be needing it done for later in the year.

Apparently in the UK you can buy the breatherlizer kits from Boots and other chemists. Still trying to find out where you can get them in Spain. Anyone know?

TomTom have two settings to help you keep the right side of the law. You can turn off the speed camera settings but leave on speed limits. This allows the satnav to tell you when you're just over the limit, even though there might not be a camera for miles.

A friend returned to the UK recently and tried in Boots for the breathaliser kit but they only had £30 ones so I said to leave it.
I have read on another site that the breathaliser law has not been passed yet and will come into affect arount June if it happens, so it seems like a wait and see.
I'm sure if it comes in the ports will be selling them and making a killing.

Its madness really. Just dont drink and drive. Surely if some people carry a breathalyser they'll drink and drive cause they think they are ok after using it. I believe it can take a while before what youve dunk will register. drunken

If they bring the law in it won't matter is you do not drink, ever, you would still need to carry one or be fined. Hopefully they will realise it is not sensible. It may save the police some money if they do not need to supply one and making money if you don't have one but I can't see it making those that drink and drive from continuing to do so - they still have to be caught first.
