Re: Dog in Galera
I have enjoyed reading this on going tale of the 'adventures' of a Dog in Galera. Has he got a name yet and if not are you open to suggestions? Mine would be Lucan.
Lots of other possiblities of course............

Re: Dog in Galera
I keep seeing him near the water tower, now my dog seems to be doing the same thing. Go's off then comes back 2 days later. I think he belongs to the same breed because he looks the same only more white on him.

Dog in Galera - Close up pic
He's been back a couple of days now - he is well house trained, woke me at 3 am to go out!. still I am nocturnal so no problems. All wounds are healing well and he is well behaved. I can't keep him forever so if you want or know someone who wants a very well behaved lovely dog you know where he is. Not withstanding I will miss him if he goes. I think he is about a year old.

Do you think he'll miss you too. I do!
Dog in Galera - update
He's been here all day again, took him for coffee in La Posa, I had the coffee, he watched. He is so good on the lead, but needs constant reassurance he is not going to get hurt, he'll just stop, then have to be coaxed into moving again. I suspect he has been abused and is very aware of tone of voice and body language. This is the third night he has stayed in, so getting used to it. I’ll hold off training him yet as he has to get completely comfortable round humans and me, He needs to be 100% sure he is not going to be hit. He has been badly attacked, he had bite marks all over, especially his back leg and his “bits”. They are all clean and healing nicely. He has the most beautiful silky fur and has ears that prick up and make him look like an Egyptian dog, I’ll try and photo him in full waggy tail, ears up position.
Re: Dog in Galera
Hi GoBiker - well done for helping him out - he looks like a sweetie.
I'm pretty certain he's a Podenco. There seems to be a few of them about at the moment, in fact, we've had a stray female Podenco turn up at ours with the unfortunate probability that she is pregnant. Again, very frightened. As hunting dogs they have pretty hard lives hence their nervousness. Your TLC will do wonders.
Good luck with him :-)

Re: Dog in Galera
Its so pleasing to hear that he is responding to your kindness and is gaining confidence and actually walking on a lead. I noticed the wound on his back leg in the first photo and he must have been in some nasty fights. I am sure I remember you writiing once that you had been a nurse back in England and so will have done a grand job sorting out those bites.
Your understanding of his needs have helped him so much and so well done and, thanks to you, we now have a photo of a very loving dog. Did he enjoy his coffee?

Galera Dog - Podenco
I just been on wikipedia and got this
The Ibizan Hound is an elegant and agile breed, with an athletic and attractive outline and a ground-covering springy trot. Though graceful in appearance, it has good bone girth and is a rugged/hardy breed. Its large upright ears - a hallmark of the breed - are broad at the base and frame a long and elegant headpiece. The neck is long and lean. It has a unique front assembly with well laid-back shoulders and relatively straight upper arm. It comes in both smooth and wire-coated varieties. It is either red, white, or a combination of red and white. Its nose is flesh colored, as are its ears, eye rims, and pads of feet. Its eyes are a striking amber color and have an alert and intelligent expression. The Ibizan may range in height from 24 to 29 inches (61 to 74 cm) and weigh from 45 to 65 pounds (20 to 29 kg), males being larger than females.
That is of the PODENCO (Podenco means Hound in Spanish) breed as was pointed out by cave bunny - well done. So someone has paid good money for that dog!!

Galera dog - perhaps why he was Dumped
According to journalist Norman Lewis, when an owner no longer wants to own one of these dogs (having too much of an appetite, for instance), it is considered very bad luck to kill the dog. Instead, they release the dog on the other side of the island, so that someone else might 'adopt' the animal.[9]

Re: Dog in Galera
It must be said that you are a credit to the English community in Spain. To do what you have done is excellent, and is promoting animal care amongst the Spanish (and English) community.
Excellent thread too, as can be witnessed by the amount of people following it. Keep up the good work, and keep us all informed of his adventures.

Re: Dog in Galera
I would just like to confirm what a lot of people have said already - loving this thread and really admire you, for all you are doing for " dog "
If his roots are from Ibiza not surprising he disapears sometimes at night, it will be the call of the doggy nightclubs and their darn foam parties although it seems a bit of home comfort is slowly winning over all the partying though - good on ya.

More info on Podencos here http://www.sos-animals.org.uk/Podenco-Rescue%282096151%29.htm Very sweet dogs, nervous, but lovely and very smart. There is a Podenco Andaluz too, but the b**t***s still leave them to fend for their selves or worse when done with them.
It looks like SOS are going to be launching a Podenco Rescue soon (as per link). Sadly there are loads abandoned in this area at the moment - aside from the one who's turned up at ours (we've named Olive Oyl), I've seen 3 in the last week including a gorgeous one who seems to have made his home at Baza hospital grounds. So hard not to bring him home!!! We saw him dragging a huge piece of hosepipe around the lawns outside the cafe the other week - he's a right monkey! Very friendly and cuddly though.
Funny enough the ones I've seen recently seem to have very similar markings - white socks at the front. Could have sworn two of the 3 I've seen were Olive, but on closer inspection they were clearly male.
Just a point to note, they are naturally very skinny. You should be able to see hip bones and ribs, although not too over pronounced. If you can see a really really sunken waist or tail and back vertebrae, they're way too skinny. Do not over feed as their stomachs are prone to bloating which can cause problems. Lovely lovely dogs; I've already fallen for our Olive although it's taken two weeks to be able to even touch her she's so nervous. Shame on the people who have made them this way

Ongoing Dog in Galera - Gaseos eructations
It's the incredible farting dog, Silent but deadly - maybe it's the Coviran Covidog stuff but he certainly is putting out some whiffy pumps. I notice that the blurb says they don't like kennels or being cooped up. That's probably why he's always out when not asleep. Possibly can't stand the smell?
Very affectionate though.

Dog in Galera - Collar gone
He's come back after a short outing to wherever he goes - without his collar. It was on faily tight I couldn't have pulled it over his head, so how he's lost it I don't know. I'll get him another manana. He's always home now, getting used to it I suppose. No less smelly though!. He pulls all the food out of his bowl then eats it off the floor!. Waits patiently outside until I let him in and always lets me know if he wants to go out. C'mon somebody MUST want such a lovely well behaved dog?
Re: Dog in Galera
Have you considered yours is not the only home he has. Might be the better one but ?

Dog Gone in Galera
I hope he does have a second home and someone else is caring for him - just like a dog to get fed twice a day. Anyway never came home last night - dirty stop out. He needs an eye kept on his leg wound which is very slow healing. I love him to bits but can't keep him forever. Mainly because I have guests through the year, not all people like dogs. Also I am on a very limited budget so would not be able to have him sorted, chipped etc. and could not afford any vet bills should they arise. Finally I go out a lot on my motorbike and he wouldn't fit in the panniers! I'll look out for him in the meantime I wouldn't let him starve or have nowhere to sleep etc.
