Hola, not new to Spain but I am looking at renting or buying a cave house in Huesca area. I've got some questions if someone would be kind enough to reply:
Is there anyway of getting an internet connection
How is water and electricity supplied?
What is the cost of gas these days?
What is the health situation now? Can the Spanish health system be accessed?

Missing life in Spain Sad

Cheers

Echica, Welcome to a great and very informative forum, this is a great area and nothing beats living in a cave.

Water - where I am, it is the local town hall, who manages the water supply. Which I feel is well managed. For a country who regularly experiences water shortages, prices I feel are very reasonable.

Electricity, is supplied by a national company Endesa. Although for those living in some properties, where Endesa power lines have not reached, solar or generator power is the alternative. Since owning a cave supplied by endesa, we have noticed significant increases in electricity costs.

Gas bottles have tended to go up and down a bit and I would say averages 13 Euros per bottle, which I think is very reasonable, (they seem to go on forever). So you can cook, have hot water and heat pretty reasonably.

I think for those pre-retirement age outside of the province of Valencia, you would need health insurance .

I hope that helps a bit, I am sure other forum members will add .

Are you living in the UK and where in Spain did you live before?

To use the Health Service, other than with an European Health Insurance card for emergencies, you need to pay into the system either by working for a legally registered employer, run a registered business yourself or be over 60 (if you come from another European country such as the UK that has agreements with Spain).
We were told, incorrectly, that we could simply access the health service by paying a sum each month. We cannot.
As already pointed out Private Health care is an option for some but if you have any medical issues, the cost of Private heath care may be prohibitive.

I recently suffered a road traffic accident and was scooped up by an ambulance and taken to Baza Hospital. Because my European Health Insurance Card, passport, drivers license etc were at the accident site I apparently waited over 4 hours until someone arrived at the hospital with them. I was then treated. It would be worth considering keeping your EHI card in a pocket rather than in a bag (which can fly 100's of metres down the road)... just in case.
Good luck with your quest to find a place. There may be forum members with property to rent.
This area is a lovely place to settle. Enjoy.

Info on cave dwelling por favor Empty Health

Post by echica Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:11 am

Hi Rosie

Sorry to hear about your accident. When we were living in the Costa Blanca area, we had 3 hospital visits, 2 of which required major surgery. One for my hubby and 2 for me.

I now have to take long term medication. It was an ordeal in itself, staying in a Spanish Hospital, but my knowledge of the language soon grew!!

We had no problem accessing the health system then, but I know the authorities have tightened up. And it was a bit of a 'post code' lottery as to whether you could get your SIP card.

I hope you are in good health now and that you have recovered from your ordeal.

Kind regards
Echica (Linda)
